Save the Koalas!

CWI proudly supports Save the Koala month!

Koala facts:

The koala is native to Australia and is a marsupial related to the kangaroo and the wombat. They are not bears!

They get their name from an Aboriginal word meaning "no drink", as koalas receive the majority of their moisture from ingesting leaves. Koalas live in eucalyptus trees and eat up to 2.2 pounds of eucalyptus leaves per day. Presently, there are only 2,000 to 8,000 koalas in the wild!

Although not officially classified as endangered, the population of Australian koalas has dropped by 90% in less than a decade. This is due to the destruction of the koala's natural habitat, a narrow crescent on the eastern coast of Australia.

Public action is desperately needed in order to persuade government officials to protect koala habitat.

Stay tuned for more information on how you can help support the Noosa Koala Recovery Project, a vital habitat recovery project located in important koala territory. In the meantime, visit our friends at Queensland Koala Crusaders!
