We are happy to share that the 7 male guinea pigs rescued from the hoarding situation who are in CWI's care are all recovering well and gaining weight.

Due to their injuries, mite infestations and ringworm, they require intensive daily care. Every evening each guinea pig is assessed for progress and new ringworm spots, given the appropriate ointments, offered liquid vitamin C, and weighed.

Sadly, not only are the guinea pigs physically damaged by their former "home", but they are also unused to human interaction. An important part of their rehabilitation is to accustom the animals to living indoors in a clean, comfortable space and to understand that humans are there to take care of them, not cause them harm. Handling them has been especially challenging as they are prone to biting out of fear.

However, progress has been made! Five of seven guinea pigs have accepted a treat or vegetable by hand. This is an important sign that they are growing more comfortable and trusting. We will continue to work on this until they are able to be handled without causing stress to the animal or the human!

All of the guinea pigs have made terrific weight gains this past week. The smallest guinea pig, named Griffin, was only 175 grams on arrival. He is now at a respectable 240 grams. Our largest guinea pig, Tristan, was 1018 grams and is now at a healthy 1085, which is appropriate for his age and structure.

Yesterday we received an additional two guinea pigs from the same situation, both male and 3-4 months old. One is recovering from skin lesions on his backside, while the other seems relatively healthy. They are in the process of getting used to their new surroundings.

We are still gladly accepting donations toward care of the nine now staying with us. You can make a donation here or buy them something from their Amazon wishlist. Ready to bring a guinea pig into your family? Please research first! Visit this link for some helpful direction with where to start learning.

On behalf of Griffin, Tristan, Simba, Essex, Arizona, Coco, Flynn, Elyan, and Doug (and existing residents Mochi, Nibs, Earl, Pinto Bean, Leo, Bakyn, and Tony), thank you for caring!

Please enjoy some photos of the crew!
