Guinea pig found sliced from shoulder to shoulder

CWI's Wheeks of Hope program has taken on one of the worst intentional cases of guinea pig abuse that we have ever seen.
Four-month-old Saffron was surrendered to a shelter in California almost two weeks ago. His "owners" claimed that he had injured himself with his ongoing scratching. We cannot account for WHY the shelter did not contact authorities, as Saffron was obviously not injured by scratching. It is simply not possible. He has what looks to be a slice with a very sharp blade that extends from one shoulder to the other that reaches through all of his layers of skin in about a third of the laceration.
When no rescues in California stepped up to help him, our rescue partner Vegas Friends of Guinea Pig Rescue agreed to take him in. He was then transferred to Las Vegas and passed onto CWI last night. (Note: we feel the unaltered pictures of Saffron are too graphic to share so we blurred the injury and colored it over in this photo.)

Saffron appears to have needed stitches at the time of his injury that he did not receive. This morning we rushed him in for emergency treatment and a pain and antibiotics plan that will help him to recover. Or, if necessary, surgery to repair the area.
This is an unplanned expense. We estimate his visit, medication, and recovery plan will cost approximately $450 (if no surgery is required). Can you chip in to help Saffron? Donate here.
Yes, we will continue to try to get justice for baby Saffron.
Yes, if you would like to see unaltered photos of his injury, we will share them with you. Email us here.
And finally, if you prefer to donate supplies, we will be updating our Wheeks of Hope wishlist linked on the donation site this evening after we receive a report from the emergency vet determining Saffron's needs.
All funds raised through the Wheeks of Hope donation page will be directed toward Saffron's care for the next week (or more, if needed)!
We will provide an update on his condition in our next newsletter at the start of March.
Thank you for continuing to stand with CWI in the fight against animal cruelty!
