5/13/26 Sloth World death toll rises to 55

We are sad to share a horrifying update on the Sloth World story. New records have been uncovered showing that Sloth World imported additional sloths after the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission investigation had begun. 

As a result, another 21 sloths died at the facility. Also, three of the thirteen sloths transferred from Sloth World to Central Florida Zoo (Dumpling, Habanero, and Bandit) have died. Necropsy results on all three sloths determined that the cause of death was emaciation. The remaining ten are still at risk with one (Mr. Ginger) in critical condition. 

This brings the total number of sloths who died as a result of Sloth World's negligence to FIFTY-FIVE.

Fortunately, attention on this tragedy is resulting in change:

• Florida Fish and Wildlife is developing a task force to overhaul exotic animal import rules.

• Efforts are underway to ban the import of sloths in Florida, and in the United States generally, for personal or commercial use.

• A criminal investigation is underway led by the Florida attorney general in conjunction with the Orange County Sheriff's office.

One thing remains clear: the Sloth World owners are guilty of horrific animal torture and abuse. They MUST be prosecuted. 

This morning, the USDA responded to CWI's call for action with a letter stating: "Sloth World’s owner, Mr. Benjamin Agresta, is not currently licensed or registered under the AWA. Although he began the application process for an exhibitor license, he subsequently withdrew his application and is no longer seeking authorization to conduct regulated activity." Fantastic news since Agresta belongs IN JAIL, not exhibiting animals.

At this stage, multiple organizations, lawmakers, and agencies are involved in this issue. We will continue to monitor developments and update you if there are any actions you can take to support efforts for sloths and to hold the Sloth World owners accountable.
