A horrific situation involving more than 400 guinea pigs is unfolding in Los Angeles. The guinea pigs were found at a private residence by a rescue based in L.A. this past weekend. The guinea pigs were both caged and running loose, and none had adequate food or water. Pregnant animals and babies, including deceased newborns, were located throughout the property. Nearly every animal displayed bite marks, ringworm (in some cases severe), and other injuries.

More than 30 animals were able to be removed from the property at that time. Animal control is presently on the ground with assistance from another rescue attempting to capture the remaining animals. It is our understanding that regional L.A. shelters are expecting to receive more than 30 animals each. As these animals all require ongoing medical treatment, they remain at risk in the shelter system.

Of the animals secured over the weekend, our rescue partner Vegas Friends of Guinea Pig Rescue agreed to take one adult and six (most likely unrelated) male babies. Those animals were then transferred to CWI for rehabilitation and medical treatment.

Due to their extensive wounds and ringworm, they are being quarantined away from other animals and provided ample nutrition and twice daily medications. They are in a comfortable, clean environment for the first time in their lives.

Their situation is absolutely heartbreaking. The smallest baby arrived weighing just 185 grams. We are fighting hard to get them all well.

We need your help! Our goal is to not only provide for the seven guinea pigs that have been transferred to us, but to help as many of the other animals as possible by providing support to L.A.-based rescues and shelters.

We hope to raise at least $2,500 to help these guinea pigs heal and have happy, healthy lives. Can you join us in this effort with a donation of any amount? Click here to help!
