On October 3, CWI submitted comments on South Africa’s Draft Leopard Strategy, calling for protection of living leopards and humane coexistence. We urged clear safeguards to prevent leopards from being killed to supply skins or body parts, independent verification and traceability, and public reporting of human-caused deaths. CWI also called for non-lethal conflict prevention and protection to take priority over trophy hunting.
And on October 4, CWI submitted comments to the U.S. Forest Service opposing the proposed rescission of the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule. We urged the agency to retain the rule to protect connected wildlife habitat from new roads, fragmentation, and increased hunting and trapping access. CWI called for full consideration of cumulative impacts and the rule’s existing wildfire-management exceptions.
