On July 31, CWI filed an emergency complaint with the USDA on behalf of elephants Lisa and Tracy for violations of the Animal Welfare Act.
After extensive review of the footage CWI captured on July 13 at Circus World, our experts determined that elephants Lisa and Tracy were both exhibiting signs that they are significantly compromised on their right sides, including knee and hip, as well as wrist and elbow. There also appears to be limited range of motion in both of their right shoulders. Walking, or at least giving rides, is demonstrably painful to both Lisa and Tracy.
We sent this complaint in honor of Anna Louise, who we recently learned passed away. Last Spring CWI filed a complaint with the USDA on behalf of Anna Louise, and the USDA has refused to share what the outcome of our complaint was. The report they sent us had all relevant information redacted. Had the USDA acted on her behalf, Anna Louise might be alive today.
We call on the USDA to demand Tracy and Lisa immediately be retired from performance, and for Carson and Barnes Circus, who "own" Tracy and Lisa to send them, along with all other elephants they are currently holding, to a reputable sanctuary.
